1870-1920 USA: Progressives

The Progressive movement in the US achieved many goals.  Provide some examples of successful reforms from the era we have been studying.  In what ways is US society progressive today?  What aspects of our society today most need "fixing"?

  1. Throughout the progressive era we definitely conquered and ended some unfinished business, but in contrast to what many Americans think; we are far from perfect. One major reform that took place during this period of time was women’s suffrage. Not only did this further push for equal treatment between men and women, but it also allowed these women a feeling of accomplishment. After watching a women being force fed during class, i can only imagine what it would have felt like to accomplish and receive what they had been fighting for. Not only this, but during the progressive era many organizations were formed. Among these are the NAACP and the Niagara Movement. Early in the progressive era there was a group of people that started the Niagara Movement. This was a group of people that wanted more right for colored people; they decided to meet in Niagara Falls in Canada, unfortunately though there weren’t enough members for the movement to be successful. So a new group was formed called the NAACP. The NAACP stands for national association for the advancement of colored people. When it was formed the movement for blacks, and otter minority rights escalated. Finally the last thing I want to talk about is the advancement for the protection of forests and wildlife. Without this happening we would not necessarily able to live like we do today, we may have lost lost or natural resources such as trees water wildlife and so on. If these laws weren't put into action we may be relying on other countries for things as simple as decent drinking water.
In my opinion the United States is not progressive today. This can be proven by the fact that our nation has not made any major accomplishments in many years. I think that as of now the United States is sugarcoating everything that has happened though out our nation that isn't very beautiful. One of these things include our spiraling economy. Lately, the only input that we have got from our government is, "it will get better" or "we need to help people on welfare”, but the truth is they have no idea what they are doing. Another thing that America is slacking in is our progression. We are currently ranked 27-nearly last- in developed countries that spend tax payer’s money on investments in education, health care and other vital social needs. If we are selling the American dream, and saying how "perfect" America is when instead of trying to cover up our cuts we need to fix them so our country is actually solving the problems instead of pretending we our okay. If we do not come to terms with ourselves soon our country will "bleed out" and we will no longer be able to function as a nation of united people, and turn into disorganized chaos and eventually break apart into different union’s countries and so on.
As you can see our image of the “American Dream” is not always what it seems. Just like every other country we also need to work on some aspects of our nation, but throughout the progressive era we definitely took some large steps in the right direction. We need to push to succeed, continue progressing, and let our nation stand up to the outsider’s beliefs and expectations.
